Putin Remains On Top In Russia

September 09, 2003

(CPOD) Sept. 9, 2003 - Vladimir Putin maintains an almost insurmountable lead in the 2004 Russian presidential race, according to a poll by the Public Opinion Foundation. 49 per cent of respondents would vote for the current president.

Putin's closest competitor is Gennady Zyuganov --leader of the Russian Communist Party-- with 13 per cent. The remaining candidates, including controversial Liberal leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky, are below 6 per cent.

Putin has faced criticism lately for his push to draft a new election law, which some journalists consider too invasive and impossible to implement. Russians will go to the polls on Dec. 7 to renew the State Duma. The presidential election is slated for Mar. 14, 2004.
