Putin Keeps Huge Lead In Russia
(CPOD) Jan. 30, 2004 - Vladimir Putin holds a commanding lead in Russia's presidential election, according to a poll by the Yuri Nevada Analytical Service. 80 per cent of respondents would support the current head of state.
Putin's closest rivals are Sergei Glazyev of Rodina with four per cent, and Nikolai Kharitonov of the Communist Party with three per cent. The presidential election is scheduled for Mar. 14.
The number of contenders was reduced to seven after pharmaceutical multimillionaire Vladimir Bryntsalov and businessman Anzori Aksentyev-Kikalishvili unexpectedly withdrew from the race. Viktor Gerashchenko was declared ineligible on Jan. 28, because he is backed by a bloc, and not a registered political party.
The populist United Russia (YR) --a new name for the Inter-Regional Movement of the Russian Federation-- dominated last month's parliamentary contest. The pro-Kremlin political organization got 37.6 per cent of the vote, and secured 222 members in the 450-seat Duma.
