Putin Backed By Two-Thirds In Russia
(CPOD) Dec. 28, 2003 - Vladimir Putin is almost assured of a victory in the 2004 Russian presidential election, according to a poll by the Public Opinion Foundation. 66 per cent of respondents would vote for the current president.
Putin's closest competitor is controversial Liberal leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky, with six per cent. The remaining candidates are below four per cent. The presidential election is slated for Mar. 14, 2004.
The populist United Russia (YR) --a new name for the Inter-Regional Movement of the Russian Federation-- dominated this month's parliamentary contest. The pro-Kremlin political organization got 37.6 per cent of the vote, and secured 222 members in the 450-seat Duma.
