Presidential Address

(CPOD) Aug. 31, 2003 - Mexicans do not take the annual presidential address too seriously, according to a poll by Consulta Mitofsky. 61 per cent of respondents believe the numbers and rhetoric presented by the head of state are "not too real."

President Vicente Fox will deliver his annual state of the country address to a joint session of congress on Sept. 1. Fox is halfway through his six-year term, and is coming off a poor showing for the ruling National Action Party (PAN) in the Jul. 6 legislative elections.

Since the mid-1980s, it has become a custom for opposition lawmakers to interrupt the president during the speech. 74 per cent of respondents believe the head of state should not be disturbed during his address.
