President Saca Stumbles in El Salvador
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Salvadoran president Antonio Saca lost some public backing last month, according to a poll by LPG Datos published in La Prensa Gráfica. On a scale of one to 10, Saca’s approval rating stands at 5.9 points, down 0.3 points since August.
Saca—a media businessman—was elected in March 2004 as the candidate for the ruling conservative Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA), garnering 57.73 per cent of the vote. ARENA candidates have won the last four presidential elections in the Central American country. Saca is ineligible for a consecutive term in office.
Rodolfo Parker—a lawmaker with the right-wing Christian Democratic Party (PDC)—recently called for the Salvadoran government to break ties with Venezuela, following the Dec. 2 defeat of Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez’s proposed constitutional reform.
On Dec. 10, Saca said El Salvador’s relations with Venezuela are "good" and declared: "At the present time we are not considering the possibility of breaking diplomatic ties with Venezuela."
The next legislative election has been tentatively scheduled for January 2009, with a presidential ballot following in March or April.
