President García Loses Five Points in Peru

September 21, 2006

- Support for Alan García fell slightly in Peru, according to a poll by Apoyo published in El Comercio. 58 per cent of respondents approve of their president's performance, down five points since August.

On Jun. 4, García—a member of the American Revolutionary People's Alliance (APRA)—won Peru's presidential election in a run-off against Ollanta Humala of the Union for Peru (UP). On Jul. 28, García officially took over as president. He had previously served as Peru's head of state from 1985 to 1990

On Sept. 19, García announced that his government intends to evaluate teachers and pupils to review the state of education in the South American country, adding, "This will be the only way to pinpoint the goals that we must reach."

On that same say, the president officially asked the Congress of the Republic to review his proposal to allow the death penalty for child abusers and murderers.
