(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Few Americans express satisfaction with the performance of George W. Bush, according to a review of four recent public opinion polls. In a survey by Opinion Research Corporation released by CNN, 36 per cent of respondents approve of the way the American president is handling his job.

Bush’s rating stands at 32 per cent in a study by Gallup for USA Today, and 30 per cent in a poll by CBS News. In addition, only 25 per cent of respondents to a survey by Zogby International rate the president’s performance in a positive light.

Bush—a Republican—earned a second four-year term in the November 2004 presidential election. The U.S. president’s approval rating has not surpassed the 40 per cent mark in a national survey since December 2006.  

On Oct. 19, Bush discussed new measures against the military regime in Myanmar—where a violent crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators began last month—declaring, "The United States tightened economic sanctions on the leaders of Burma’s regime, and imposed an expanded visa ban on those responsible for the most egregious violations of human rights, as well as their family members. (...) We will continue to review our policies and consider additional measures if Burma’s leaders do not end the brutal repression of their own people whose only offence is the desire to live in freedom."
