Political Parties Last In Transparency International Report

(ARC-CPOD) Dec. 12, 2004 - Political parties are regarded as corrupt institutions in many countries around the world, according to a report by Transparency International. Asked to assess different sectors on a scale of one to five (one meaning not at all corrupt, five meaning extremely corrupt), respondents rated political parties with a mark of 4.0.

The legislative branch, the police, the judiciary, tax revenue authorities and the private sector were next on the list.

In Bolivia, Brazil and Peru, more than 70 per cent of respondents said corruption affects political life to a large extent. At least 54 per cent of respondents in Ecuador, Costa Rica and the Philippines expect corruption in their countries to worsen.

In Cameroon, Georgia, Ghana, Guatemala, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Moldova, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Russia, South Africa and Ukraine, the police was regarded as one of the most corrupt sectors.
