Polish Citizens Support EU Membership

June 06, 2003

(CPOD) Jun. 6, 2003 - A referendum on Poland's entry into the European Union (EU) appears to have enough support, according to a poll by OBOP. 74 per cent of respondents say they will vote in favour of joining the EU.

The plebiscite will only be binding if 50 per cent of eligible voters cast their ballots. 83 per cent of respondents say they will head to the polls this weekend.

Polish president Aleksander Kwasniewski predicted the referendum would pass with the support of 80 per cent of eligible voters. German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder visited Poland this week, to support the government's position on the EU.

Poland could become a member state on May 1, 2004. Malta, Slovenia, Hungary, Lithuania and Slovakia have also held positive EU referenda in the last few months.
