Poles Overwhelmingly Reject Same-Sex Marriage

August 05, 2009

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Three quarters of people in Poland are against allowing homosexual couples to wed, according to a poll by GfK Polonia. 75 per cent of respondents oppose the legalization of same-sex marriage, while 87 per cent reject allowing same-sex couples to adopt children.

In 2007, then Polish prime minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski expressed concerns about the reach of a new European treaty, declaring, "We want to avoid seeing this argument being used for pressing on us in morality and tradition-related issues; or forcing us for example to introduce homosexual marriages in Poland including the right of such couples to adopt children."

Same-sex marriage is currently legal in the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, South Africa, Norway and Sweden. At least 20 countries offer some form of legal recognition to same-sex unions.

On Jul. 21, Polish gay activist Waldemar Zboralski referred to his efforts to legalize same-sex unions in Poland, saying, "It is a shame that the Polish government formally force Polish people to leave Poland to search for human rights in Western Europe. My goal is to stop hatred in Poland against gay and lesbian people and to force the Polish government to open the way for civil partnerships as soon as possible."
