Peruvians Turn Their Backs on García

August 17, 2008

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Few Peruvians are satisfied with the work of Alan García, according to a poll by CPI. 71.8 per cent of respondents disapprove of their president’s performance, up 13.3 points since May.

In June 2006, García—a member of the American Revolutionary People’s Alliance (APRA)—won Peru’s presidential election in a run-off against nationalist Ollanta Humala of the Union for Peru (UP). In July, García officially took over as president. He had previously served as Peru’s head of state from 1985 to 1990, when he oversaw a major economic crisis.

On Aug. 13, García said some people have misinterpreted recent energy shortages, declaring, "There is no energy crisis. What happened is that it rained less this year, so the growth in electric energy created with gas has to compensate for electric energy produced by hydro power."
