(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Peruvian president Alan García has lost public backing this month, according to a poll by Ipsos, Apoyo, Opinión y Mercado published in El Comercio. 30 per cent of respondents approve of the head of state’s performance, down five points since May.

In June 2006, García—a member of the American Revolutionary People’s Alliance (APRA)—won Peru’s presidential election in a run-off against nationalist Ollanta Humala of the Union for Peru (UP). In July, García officially took over as president. He had previously served as Peru’s head of state from 1985 to 1990, when he oversaw a major economic crisis.

On Jun. 24, García signed into law a bill that protects employees from contractors who underpay them or fail to provide them with social benefits. The new rules will penalize companies for hiring contractor firms that fail to comply with existing labour regulations. García declared: "We want Peru to grow for everyone, to advance for its workers, and to eradicate and eliminate slavery in the 21st century."
