Peru’s García Starts Term with High Numbers

August 14, 2006

- Many Peruvian adults are satisfied with the performance of their new president, according to a poll by CPI. 71.8 per cent of respondents approve of Alan García's performance.

On Jun. 4, García—a member of the American Revolutionary People's Alliance (APRA)—won Peru's presidential election in a run-off against Ollanta Humala of the Union for Peru (UP). On Jul. 28, García officially took over as president. He had previously served as Peru's head of state from 1985 to 1990

Earlier this month, García urged the country's lawmakers to support his proposal to allow the death penalty for child abusers and murderers, saying, "I think society needs more rigour and order, and delinquents need tougher sanctions. (...) I think these people have no right to live."
