(CPOD) Jul. 14, 2003 - Residents of the West Bank and Gaza agree with the latest developments to achieve peace in the Middle East, according to a poll by the State Information Service. 68.8 per cent of respondents are satisfied with the three-month truce agreed to by Fatah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad on May 31.

The ceasefire is expected to allow the implementation of the road map for peace, developed by the United States, the United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU) and Russia. A fully independent Palestine by 2005 is the key provision of the plan.

Palestinian Authority president Yasser Arafat—shunned from major discussions on the road map—has been critical of violations to the ceasefire. 35 per cent of respondents say their support for Arafat increased as a result of his actions.
