Pacheco Still Down In Costa Rica
(CPOD) Sept. 22, 2003 - Abel Pacheco continues to lose public support, according to a poll by Unimer released by La Nacion. Only 28 per cent of respondents in the Central American country have a positive opinion of the president.
Pacheco, of the Social-Christian Unity Party, was elected in a run-off in April 2002 with 58 per cent of the vote. Issues such as alleged contributions by foreign entities into his campaign fund, as well as his moral support for the war in Iraq have affected his approval rating.
Support for the much-heralded Free Trade Agreement between Costa Rica and the United States has eroded in the last few months. 50 per cent of respondents agree with the proposal, a nine per cent drop since May.
