Out With The Old (Leaders) In Nicaragua

(CPOD) Jun. 24, 2003 - Current finance minister Eduardo Montealegre could become the next president of Nicaragua, according to a poll by M&R. 36.5 per cent of respondents would vote for Montealegre in the 2006 election.

Former presidents Daniel Ortega of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) and Arnoldo Alemán of the Constitutionalist Liberal Party (PLC) have hinted at a possible run.

Ortega, who ruled the country in the late 1980s, has been a losing candidate in elections held in 1990, 1996 and 2001. Only 10.7 per cent of respondents would vote for him again. Alemán was president from 1997 to 2002, and has the support of just 1.1 per cent of respondents.
