(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - More than half of Britons would cast a ballot for Barack Obama if they had the chance, according to a poll by YouGov published in the Daily Telegraph. 53 per cent of respondents would vote for the Democratic contender.

Republican John McCain is a distant second with 11 per cent. Eight per cent of respondents would vote for someone else, and 28 per cent are undecided.

McCain has become the presumptive Republican Party presidential nominee in 2008, while Obama clinched the Democratic Party’s nomination on Jun. 3.

In January 2008, British Conservative leader David Cameron discussed the U.S. electoral campaign, saying, "I’m enjoying watching Barack Obama. I think he’s a brilliant speaker, I think his optimism and sense of hope for the future is inspiring a lot of people. (...) What people like is the sense that Obama generates, that we don’t have to be like this, we can do better. I think we need that same sense of possibility here."

U.S. president George W. Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The U.S. presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
