George W. Bush

(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Public support for George W. Bush remains low in the United States, according to a poll by Princeton Survey Research Associates for the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press. 43 per cent of respondents approve of the president's performance, a two per cent drop since March.

Bush—a Republican—earned a second four-year term in the November 2004 presidential election. Yesterday in Virginia, the American president discussed his energy proposals, saying, "The first step toward making America less dependent on foreign oil is to improve fuel conservation and efficiency. My administration is leading research into new technologies that reduce gas consumption while maintaining performance, such as lightweight auto parts and more efficient batteries."

Specific measures detailed by Bush include a $4,000 U.S. tax credit for Americans who purchase hybrid vehicles. The president also asked Congress "to authorize pro-growth, pro-job, pro-environment exploration" of Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
