Norwegians Leaning Towards EU Membership
(CPOD) Aug. 21, 2003 - The European Union (EU) continues to polarize public opinion in Norway, according to a poll by the MMI Institute. 41 per cent of respondents are in favor of joining the EU, while 33 per cent reject the idea.
Malta, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland have held positive EU referenda in the last few months. Norway has rejected EU membership in plebiscites held in 1972 and 1994. There are no plans for a new vote in the near future.
Prime minister Kjell Magne Bondevik is against full membership, but wants Norway to develop a new relationship with Europe.
