New York Primary: McCain and Hillary Prevail

February 05, 2008

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Voting intention surveys conducted in the Empire State place John McCain as the clear leader in today’s United States presidential primary.

In the seven polls of Republican Party voters, the Arizona senator is in first place with the support of at least 49 per cent of respondents. Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney stands below the 31 per cent mark, while support is lower for former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee and Texas congressman Ron Paul.

Among Democratic Party voters, New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton garners the backing of a majority of respondents in five surveys, way ahead of Illinois senator Barack Obama.

In all, 21 states will hold Republican primaries or caucuses today, choosing 41 per cent of all delegates. The Democratic primaries or caucuses will be held in 22 states, American Samoa and "Democrats Abroad", choosing 52 per cent of all pledged delegates.
