National Ties Labour In New Zealand

September 14, 2004

(CPOD) Sept. 14, 2004 - The top two political organizations in New Zealand are tied in voting intention, according to a poll by Colmar Brunton released by One News. 42 per cent of respondents would vote for the ruling Labour party in the next general election, while 42 per cent would support the opposition National party.

New Zealand First is third with five per cent, followed by the Green party, ACT, the Maori Party and United Future. Last month, Labour held a four per cent lead over National. The next general election is scheduled for July 2005.

Yesterday, prime minister Helen Clark "strongly" criticized National family spokesperson Judith Collins for proposing that doctors inform parents if their daughter is having an abortion.

Since 1977, New Zealand's laws have protected the privacy of women under 16 who do not want to discuss pregnancy termination with their parents or guardians. The issue is expected to be put to a vote in the House of Representatives in October.
