Most Bulgarians See Borissov Positively
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Most people in Bulgaria hold a positive opinion of current prime minister Boyko Borissov, according to a poll by Alpha Research. 51 per cent of respondents share this view, while 20 per cent have a negative opinion of him. The negative perception of Borissov is up four points since December.
Bulgaria held a general election in July 2009. Final results gave the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party 39.7 per cent of the vote, followed by the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) with 17.7 per cent. The Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) was third with 14.46 per cent.
Former Sofia mayor Borissov—who founded the centre-right, pro-European GERB in 2006—was sworn in as Bulgaria’s new prime minister in July. Borissov replaced Socialist leader Sergey Stanishev, who had served as head of government since 2005.
Earlier this month, responding to the question of when was the last time he felt proud of his country, Borissov declared: "When I first went to the headquarters of the United States’ intelligence, I was met by the director, who greeted me with the words that he wanted to get to know a leader of a country which has had both a man and a woman become world chess champions."
