Angus Reid Global Monitor : Polls & Research
Most Britons Pick Brown as Next Prime Minister
(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Many adults in Britain would prefer to have current chancellor of the exchequer Gordon Brown as their head of government, according to a poll by YouGov released by the Sunday Times. 43 per cent of respondents would rather have a Labour party administration headed by Brown, while 37 per cent would choose a Conservative government under David Cameron.
Brown has been in charge of Britain's finances since 1997—the longest continuous tenure for any public servant in the position. He has been mentioned as a possible replacement for current Labour leader and prime minister Tony Blair, who has vowed to retire at the end of his current mandate in 2010.
Since December 2005, Cameron has been the leader of the Conservative party. The 39-year-old former education spokesman is the fourth person to command the opposition organization in the past eight years.
Yesterday during a BBC interview, the 54-yerar-old Brown appeared to suggest that the transition is already being discussed, saying, "Tony Blair and I are both talking about the long-term challenges ahead. If you take the environment, I think we've got a great deal to do to meet the climate change ambitions of the country."
The next election to the House of Commons must be held on or before Jun. 3, 2010. Sitting prime ministers can dissolve Parliament and call an early ballot at their discretion.
