Mexicans Support Birth Control, Not Abortion
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Mexican adults remain opposed to pregnancy termination, according to a poll by Consulta Mitofsky. Only 32.1 per cent of respondents agree with abortion.
In addition, 93.7 per cent of respondents support the use of a condom as a means of preventing a pregnancy, 87.3 per cent agree with birth control pills, and 60.7 per cent back the morning-after pill.
In Mexico, abortion is allowed only in cases of rape or when the mother's life is at risk. An investigation by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) found that roughly one million abortions are conducted every year in the Latin American country.
The Mexico City legislature is currently debating a proposal which would allow women to interrupt a pregnancy in the first 12 weeks of gestation. Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera expressed dissatisfaction with the proposal, saying, "Opposing abortion is not a problem of faith or dogma, but a manifestation of respect to human life."
