Merged Party Closes In On Canadian Liberals
(CPOD) Nov. 7, 2003 - The proposed melding of the Canadian Alliance (CA) and the Progressive Conservatives (PC) would generate a close federal election in Canada, according to a poll by JMCK Communications. 36 per cent of respondents would support the ruling Liberals, a 4.8 per cent lead over the merged party.
Former Ontario premier Mike Harris --who has already stated that he is not interested in a political comeback-- is the first choice to lead the new political organization. 22.5 per cent of respondents would back Harris, while 19.6 per cent would support CA leader Stephen Harper. The two right-wing parties must ratify their deal by Dec. 12.
Former finance minister Paul Martin is widely expected to become the new Liberal leader on Nov. 15, substituting prime minister Jean Chretien.
