Menem On Top, But Run-Off Certain In Argentina

April 16, 2003

(CPOD) Apr. 16, 2003 - Former president Carlos Menem holds the lead in Argentina's presidential election, according to a poll by Catterberg & Asociados for newspaper La Nación. Menem was the first choice for 21.2 per cent of respondents, followed closely by Santa Cruz governor Néstor Kirchner. Adolfo Rodríguez Saá and Ricardo López Murphy are the only other candidates with more than 10 per cent of support.

Menem and Kirchner have switched the first two spots all along the campaign, but the race seems destined for a second round. If no candidate gets more than 45 per cent of all votes on Apr. 27—or reaches a percentage between 40 and 45 per cent with a 10 per cent lead over the closest competitor—a run-off between the two leading candidates would take place on May 18.

The poll shows that 8.3 per cent of respondents have not decided what candidate to vote for. The dreadful economic prospects, and the 21.5 per cent unemployment rate have been the main issues during the campaign.
