Menem Loses Points In Argentina
(CPOD) Oct. 30, 2003 - Carlos Menem continues to be a controversial figure in Argentina, according to a poll by Ricardo Rouvier y Asociados. 70 per cent of respondents have a negative or very negative impression of the former president.
Menem --in power from 1989 to 1999-- was constitutionally barred from seeking a third straight term, and waited four years to run again. After getting more votes than any other candidate in last April's presidential election, Menem withdrew from the run-off after polls indicated an overwhelming victory for eventual president Nestor Kirchner.
Menem has had to defend himself from severe allegations, from covering up the alleged involvement of Iran in the bombing of a Buenos Aires Jewish center, to his indictment over an illegal arms sales investigation. 74.6 per cent of respondents would not like to see him back in the political arena.
