Megawati Leads, But Many Undecided In Indonesia
(CPOD) Sept. 4, 2003 - Despite a drop in approval ratings, Megawati Sukarnoputri remains the first choice for Indonesian voters, according to a poll by IFES published in the Jakarta Post. 13.7 per cent of respondents would vote for the incumbent president.
Megawati took over the presidency in July 2001, after corruption allegations led to the removal of Abdurrahman Wahid. Megawati is the daughter of Sukarno, who was Indonesia's first president after leading the country to independence in 1949.
Acting security minister Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is the only other prospective candidate with more than 10 per cent. A third of respondents remain undecided. Indonesia will hold its first direct presidential election on Jul. 5, 2004.
