McCain Ties Obama, Trails Hillary in U.S.
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain are even in the United States presidential race, according to a poll by Ipsos-Public Affairs released by the Associated Press. 45 per cent of respondents would vote for the Illinois senator in this year’s ballot, while 45 per cent would back the Arizona senator.
Support for Obama fell by six points since late February, while backing for McCain increased by four points. In a separate match-up, McCain trails New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton by three points.
On Apr. 11, former U.S. president Bill Clinton urged voters to support his wife, saying, "She’d be the best person to bring the soldiers home from Iraq, to rebuild the military, to take care of the veterans, to fight the war on terror and to say to the world ‘America is back in the cooperation business and the diplomacy business.’ From now on, it’s diplomacy first and military force as a last resort, not the other way around."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
