Angus Reid Global Monitor : Polls & Research
McCain Leads Hillary, Ties Obama in U.S.
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Republican John McCain holds a slight edge over Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton in a potential United States presidential contest, according to a poll by Hart/McInturff released by the Wall Street Journal and NBC News. 46 per cent of respondents would vote for the Arizona senator, while 44 per cent would back the New York City senator.
Support for McCain in this match-up increased by three points since December, while backing for Rodham Clinton fell by the same margin. In a separate contest, McCain is tied with Illinois senator Barack Obama.
Yesterday, Florida governor Charlie Crist endorsed McCain, saying, "We have a lot of great people who are running for president this year who would all do well. I don’t think anybody would do better than the man who stands next to me; that’s an endorsement."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
