Angus Reid Global Monitor : Polls & Research
McCain Leads Hillary, Even with Obama in U.S.
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Republican John McCain holds the upper hand in a United States presidential contest against Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, according to a poll by Gallup released by USA Today. 50 per cent of respondents would vote for the Arizona senator, while 46 per cent would back the New York senator.
Support for McCain increased by one point since early February, while backing for Rodham Clinton fell by two points. In a separate match-up, McCain and Illinois senator Barack Obama are virtually tied.
Yesterday, McCain chided the two Democratic Party contenders for their views on free trade, saying, "I believe (existing) agreements should be kept. And I believe that when someone (...) would renegotiate a treaty which went through years of negotiations with our leading trading partner Canada without consulting or without the agreement of our Canadian partners, I think it sends the wrong message to the world."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
