(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama are even in the United States presidential race, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 45 per cent of respondents would support the Arizona senator in this year’s election, while 45 per cent would vote for the Illinois senator.

Support for McCain fell by two points since early April, while backing for Obama increased by one point. In a separate match-up, McCain holds a two-point edge over New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton

Yesterday, Obama discussed the race, saying, "There’s no doubt that a campaign has to continually fine-tune itself. You know this has been a long campaign. What worked well three months ago, if you’re doing the exact same thing now, it may not work as well. (...) The candidates with the Washington experience—my opponents—are good people. They mean well but they’ve been in Washington an awful long time and, even with all that experience they talk about, nothing has happened."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
