Many Russians Want To Join WTO
(CPOD) Jul. 17, 2004 - Many citizens of Russia want to join the world's foremost international commerce group, according to a poll by the Yury Levada Analytical Center. 58 per cent of respondents support their country's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO).
In May, Russian president Vladimir Putin achieved the backing of the European Union (EU) in his attempt to secure WTO membership. In his second term, Putin has placed economic growth as an important component of his agenda.
Since 1995, 147 countries have joined the WTO. Along with Russia, another 23 nations have initiated negotiations to become full members of the group.
