Lula Still Popular In Brazil
(CPOD) Jun. 8, 2003 - Despite recent controversial measures, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is still enjoying high approval ratings in Brazil, according to a poll by Instituto Sensus. 78 per cent of respondents approve of Lula's government.
The president's popularity was expected to take a hit after his decision to raise interest rates in Brazil to 26.5 per cent, a measure that drew criticism from vice-president Jose Alencar.
Lula's presidency has been an economic success so far. Brazil's currency—the Real—hit an 11-month high this week, and initial concerns over the country's massive debt have faded away.
