Lowest Approval Ever For Toledo In Peru
(CPOD) May 21, 2003 - Support for Alejandro Toledo has plummeted in Peru, according to a poll by Apoyo. Only 14 per cent of respondents approve of the president's performance.
Toledo took office with an approval rating of 59 per cent, after defeating former president Alan García in a run-off on Jun. 3, 2001. Protests from peasants and farmers, as well as a lingering strike by education workers over a wage increase, have contributed to the president's lowest numbers since coming to power 22 months ago.
Peruvians appear to be equally disheartened by their government, Congress and courts. Less than 20 per cent of respondents approve of how these three entities are being managed.
