Lower Support for New Susilo Term in Indonesia

April 09, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Voter support for Indonesia's president is eroding, according to a poll by the Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI). 39 per cent of respondents would support Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in the next presidential election, down nine points since December.

Yudhoyono—a security minister who ran as the candidate of the Democrat Party (PD)—won the September 2004 presidential election with 60.62 per cent of the vote in a run-off over incumbent Megawati Sukarnoputri of the Struggling Indonesian Democratic Party (PDIP). The vote marked the first time Indonesian voters picked their head of state through the ballot box.

Megawati is second on the list of prospective candidates with 26 per cent, followed by Wiranto of the Party of Functional Groups (Golkar) with six per cent, Amien Rais of the National Mandate Party (PAN) with four per cent, current vice-president Jusuf Kalla with three per cent, and People's Consultative Assembly speaker Hidayat Nur Wahid also with three per cent.

Last month, Megawati criticized the current administration, saying, "The government, for example, fails to promote the pluralism of Indonesian culture as an attraction for foreign tourists."

The next presidential election is tentatively scheduled for July 2009.
