(CPOD) Apr. 19, 2004 - Many adults in Louisiana want the United States constitution to forbid wedlock for gay and lesbian partners, according to a poll by Harris, DeVille and Associates and Southern Media & Opinion Research, Inc. 62 per cent of respondents support a federal amendment that would ban same-sex marriage.
On Feb. 24, U.S. president George W. Bush asked the U.S. Congress to enact a federal constitutional amendment that would define marriage as the union between a man and a woman.
Marriage certificates have been issued to same-sex couples in the states of California, Oregon, New Mexico and New York, while civil unions are available in the state of Vermont.
Louisiana currently prohibits same-sex marriage, but some lawmakers have proposed making the ban part of the state's constitution.
