Liberals, Martin First Choices In Canada

November 06, 2003

(CPOD) Nov. 6, 2003 - The Liberal Party remains on top in Canada, according to a poll by JMCK Communications. 37.8 per cent of respondents would support the Liberals in a federal election, a 21.8 per cent lead over the Canadian Alliance.

Former finance minister Paul Martin is widely expected to become the new Liberal leader on Nov. 15, substituting prime minister Jean Chretien. The Canadian Alliance announced a merger with the Progressive Conservatives last month, to create a unified party.

Martin remains the man to beat for the country's top political job. 43.8 per cent of respondents say they prefer him as the next prime minister. Canadian Alliance leader Stephen Harper is second, with 14.1 per cent.
