(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Public support for George W. Bush remains particularly low, according to a review of three recent public opinion polls. In a survey by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, 31 per cent of respondents approve of the way the U.S. president is handling his job.

In a study by Harris Interactive, 31 per cent of respondents have a positive assessment of the job Bush is doing. In a poll by CBS News, 29 per cent of respondents approve of Bush’s performance.

Bush—a Republican—earned a second four-year term in the November 2004 presidential election. The U.S. president’s approval rating has not surpassed the 40 per cent mark in a national survey since December 2006.

On Sept. 20, Bush discussed his views on the country’s financial standing, saying, "The fundamentals of our nation’s economy are strong. Inflation is down. Job markets are steady and strong. After all, the national unemployment rate is 4.6 per cent. Corporate profits appear to be strong. Exports are up. There is no question that there is some unsettling times in the housing market, and credits associated with the housing market. (...) I’m optimistic, but I would be pessimistic if I thought Congress was going to get their way. And they’re not. They’re not going to raise taxes."
