Labour Leads, Brown Outranks Blair In Britain

(Angus Reid - CPOD Global Scan) - The governing Labour party remains the top political organization in Britain, according to a poll by ICM Research published in News of the World. 38 per cent of respondents would vote for Labour in the next general election.

The Conservative party is in second place with 31 per cent, followed by the Liberal Democrats with 21 per cent.

Tony Blair has been Britain's head of government since 1997. 26 per cent of respondents say Blair would be the best head of government, while 27 per cent would choose current chancellor of the exchequer Gordon Brown.

Charles Kennedy—who has headed the Liberal Democrats since August 1999—was third with 15 per cent, followed by Conservative leader Michael Howard with 14 per cent.

Britain must renew the House of Commons by June 2006. There is growing speculation that an election will take place in May 2005.
