Kirchner Victory All But Certain In Argentina
(CPOD) May 13, 2003 - Néstor Kirchner is poised to become Argentina's next president, according to two separate surveys. In the poll by OPSM, 71.1 per cent of respondents say they will vote for Kirchner in this weekend's run-off election. A study by Analogías also gives Kirchner a 42.2 per cent lead over former president Carlos Menem.
The overwhelming support for Kirchner has fueled the possibility of Menem actually retiring from the contest. The dreadful economic situation, and the 21.5 per cent unemployment rate have been the main issues throughout the campaign.
