Kirchner Takes Lead, Menem Close By In Argentina

April 02, 2003

(CPOD) Apr. 2, 2003. - Néstor Kirchner, governor of the Santa Cruz province, has taken the lead in the upcoming Argentine presidential elections, according to a poll by Ipsos Mora y Araujo, published in La Nación. Kirchner is the first choice for 21.2 per cent of respondents, while former president Carlos Menem and Adolfo Rodriguez Saá were virtually tied for second place.

Kirchner, a peronist like Menem and Rodríguez Saá, has the backing of current president Eduardo Duhalde. The dreadful economic prospects, and the 21.5 per cent unemployment rate have been the main issues during the campaign.

Menem had been an early frontrunner, but the race is still hotly contested and may require a second round. If no candidate gets more than 45 per cent of the votes on Apr. 27—or reaches a percentage between 40 and 45 per cent with a 10 per cent lead over the closest competitor—a run-off between the two leading candidates would take place on May 18.

The poll shows that 11.9 per cent of respondents have not decided which candidate to vote for.
