Kibaki Falls, Odinga Gains in Kenya
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki has lost public support in his re-election bid but remains ahead of all other contenders, according to a poll by Steadman Research Services. 45 per cent of respondents would vote for Kibaki in this year's election, down six points since March.
Former roads and public works minister Raila Odinga is second with 25 per cent—up eight points in three months—followed by former environment minister Kalonzo Musyoka of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) with 11 per cent. Support is lower for prospective Orange Democratic Movement (ODM-Kenya) candidate Musalia Mudavadi, Uhuru Kenyatta of the Kenya African National Union (KANU), and KANU secretary-general William Ruto.
In the 2002 presidential election, National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) candidate Kibaki defeated Kenyatta with 62.2 per cent of all cast ballots. Kibaki had served as vice-president under Daniel arap Moi. The next presidential election is tentatively scheduled for December.
On Jul. 12, Kibaki responded to a proposal to push back the presidential and National Assembly elections until February 2008, saying, "That is out of the question. The elections will be held in December. Period. (...) These people need to stop asking for more time. In any case, if we were to change the date, we would bring it forward because there are many important things we would like to see happen in December."
