Jobs, Crime Top Worries In Argentina

June 12, 2003

(CPOD) Jun. 12, 2003 - High unemployment is the main concern in Argentina, according to a poll by Ipsos Mora y Araujo published in daily La Nación. 82 per cent of respondents say the government must act quickly to create more jobs. 21.5 per cent of Argentines are currently out of work.

Rising crime statistics are the second biggest problem. According to official estimates, a Buenos Aires resident is kidnapped every 36 hours. Education, poverty and health are also major issues.

President Néstor Kirchner, who took office last month, has promised a crackdown on crime, as well as a review of the country's justice system.
