Israelis Question Targeted Attacks Against Hamas
(CPOD) Jun. 13, 2003 - The controversial Israeli policy of targeted attacks against Hamas militants has swayed public opinion in Israel, according to a Mina Tzemah/Dahaf survey published in Yediot Ahronot, 58 per cent of respondents want such assailments suspended.
The escalation in violence began on Jun. 8, when Palestinian groups killed five Israeli soldiers in a joint operation. Two days later, Israeli helicopters launched a deadly missile attack aimed at Hamas spokesman Abdel Aziz Rantisi.
On Jun. 11, at least 17 people were killed in a suicide bombing attributed to Hamas. The Israeli government has continued to target Hamas members through helicopter attacks, which have resulted in 23 fatalities.
The problems come after a meeting between Israeli and Palestinian leaders with United States president George W. Bush, aimed at pushing the "road map" for peace in the area.
