Since the 1990s, Israel has granted spousal and survivor benefits to gay and lesbian partners. In November 2006, Israel's High Court of Justice ordered the government to acknowledge same-sex marriages performed abroad. In January 2007, Jerusalem officially registered its first homosexual married couple.

Same-sex marriage is currently legal in the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada and South Africa, and at least 18 countries offer some form of legal recognition to same sex unions.
