Iraq, Economy Top Concerns For Americans

(CPOD) Jul. 2, 2004 - The situation in Iraq remains the key worry for Americans in an election year, according to a poll by CBS News and the New York Times. 23 per cent of respondents say they would like to hear the candidates discuss the war during the presidential campaign.

The coalition effort against the regime of Saddam Hussein was launched in March 2003. At least 859 American soldiers have died since the war began. On Jun. 28, Iraq's new government was sworn in at a ceremony attended by former U.S. civilian administrator Paul Bremer.

Financial matters are also in the mind of Americans. 20 per cent of respondents say the economy and jobs should be campaign topics as well. Health care and Medicare were mentioned by 13 per cent of respondents.

The United States presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 2.
