In 2008, Republicans Would Beat Democrats
- Republican Arizona senator John McCain would defeat two prospective Democratic presidential nominees in the 2008 United States presidential election, according to a poll by Opinion Dynamics released by Fox News. McCain holds a seven-point edge over both New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and former vice-president Al Gore.
In a sample with Rudy Giuliani as the Republican nominee, the former New York City mayor maintains a four-point advantage over both Rodham Clinton and Gore.
In 2000, McCain won seven Republican presidential primaries in the U.S., but retired from the race after eventual nominee George W. Bush became the frontrunner. Giuliani garnered national and international attention in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and has formed a political action committee called Solutions America.
Rodham Clinton—a former first lady—will seek a new six-year term in the Senate in the Nov. 7 election. Gore served as the U.S. vice-president from 1993 to 2001, but lost the 2000 presidential election to Bush.
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
