Hillary is Top Democratic Presidential Hopeful for 2008

Abstract: (Angus Reid Global Scan) - Many supporters of the Democratic Party in the United States would vote for current New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in a presidential primary, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 43 per cent of respondents say they would support Rodham Clinton.

(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Many supporters of the Democratic Party in the United States would vote for current New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in a presidential primary, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 43 per cent of respondents say they would support Rodham Clinton.

Former U.S. vice-president Al Gore is second with 14 per cent, followed by 2004 vice-presidential candidate and former North Carolina senator John Edwards with 13 per cent, and current Massachusetts senator and 2004 presidential nominee John Kerry with 10 per cent.

In a list that does not include either Rodham Clinton or Gore, Kerry is first with 38 per cent, followed by Edwards with 28 per cent, Delaware senator Joseph Biden and retired general Wesley Clark with six per cent each, and New Mexico governor Bill Richardson with five per cent.

Rodham Clinton—a former first lady—was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2000, defeating Republican Rick Lazio by 12 per cent. She ruled out a presidential bid in 2004.

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
