Hillary, Gore Are Top 2008 Democratic Contenders

August 21, 2006

- Hillary Rodham Clinton is first on the list of prospective Democratic presidential candidates for the 2008 election, according to a poll by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press. 29 per cent of respondents would like the New York senator to become the nominee.

Former United States vice-president Al Gore is second with 13 per cent, followed by former North Carolina senator John Edwards with 11 per cent. Support is lower for Massachusetts senator and 2004 presidential nominee John Kerry, Delaware senator Joseph Biden, New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, former Virginia governor Mark Warner, and Wisconsin senator Russ Feingold.

Rodham Clinton is heavily favoured to earn a new six-year term in the upper house on Nov. 7. Gore recently was featured in the movie "An inconvenient truth", which discusses global warming. In June, Gore declared, "I have no plans to run for president again."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
